If you're
going on an African Safari for the first time, chances are,
you don't have much of an idea on the necessary things that you must
take with you. Here's a list of some essentials that you mustn't do
without.
1. Important Documents
That means your visa, passport, airline tickets, other required
travel documents, traveler's checks and a few valid IDs. It would be
wise to make photocopies of these documents.
2. A Like-Minded Travel Buddy
It could be a family member, your best friend, or your significant
other. Sight - seeing is no fun when you're all by yourself. It's
nice to share the unforgettable moments of your vacation with a
special person, just make sure that you're both compatible when it
comes to having a sense of daring and adventure. Just imagine how
the whole trip would turn out if you spent it with someone who
complained about the tiniest things or little unavoidable
inconveniences. If you really can't think of someone who's a good
enough match, then perhaps it's better to travel by yourself.
3. The Right Clothes
Do some research on the area you'll be visiting. Find out about the
local climate and the general weather conditions. Comfort should be
your top priority. Light and casual clothing in neutral colors is
best. But if you plan to stay in a luxury hotel or somewhere posh,
you might want to bring dressier clothes too. Prepare for cooler
temperatures in the evenings. Pack a couple of sweaters and jackets
just in case. Bring swimming clothes if you think you'll need them.
Also make sure to use the most comfortable but resilient shoes that
you can find. Sandals and ankle length walking boots would be ideal.
Travel light. Use a soft bag.
4. Sun Protection
Your trip will involve a lot of outdoor activities under the hot
African sun. Protect your skin. Load up on sunscreen. Invest in a
good wide - brimmed hat, scarves and sunglasses with UV protection.
5. Capture Those Memories
An African Safari is a truly unique experience. Make sure to
record those wonderful moments with a flash or video camera. Guard
these valuables from potential thieves. And don't forget to stock up
on batteries and film!
6. Cash And Lots Of It
Yes we need to watch that budget, but it's always advisable to bring
more money than you had planned. We never know when we might need
that extra cash and we have no way of knowing what emergencies or
delays we might encounter while traveling.
7. Take Care Of Your Health
Bring insect repellents, a first - aid kit and all the medicines you
need, especially if you are prone to travel - sickness. You'll be
staying in a different country and will surely be sampling foods
that might not be friendly to your digestive system. Bring anti -
diarrhea tablets and anti - allergy medications. If you're headed
for a place known to have malaria, be ready with anti - malaria
prophylactics.
8. Bring Lots Of Water During The Safari
Dehydration and heat stroke can really ruin your whole adventure.
Remember to always take in lots of liquids. Inform your professional
guide whenever you start to feel dizzy or severely exhausted during
the trip. Walking safaris might especially be a bit taxing on
those who aren't quite physically fit.
9. Insurance
Going on a safari trip is potentially dangerous as much as it
is exciting. Making sure that you are covered by your travel or
international medical insurance can give you peace of mind while
abroad.
It's always important to plan ahead. Don't overlook the small
important details. Make sure that you have everything you need to
ensure your comfort and safety and to guarantee a smooth and
enjoyable trip.
