Discover Rovaniemi - Jewel of Lapland

Author: Seb Jay

Rovaniemi is the provincial capital of Lapland. It is situated only a whisker away from the Arctic Circle at the confluence of Northern Finland's two great rivers - the River Ounasjoki and River Kemijoki. The city was founded during the Stone Age and is thought to have been continuously occupied since that time. Today, Rovaniemi is seen as the gateway to Lapland and enjoys its status as a popular all year round tourist destination.

Summer in Rovaniemi
The summer in Rovaniemi may be short, but it is spectacular! Bathed in 24-hour daylight under the Midnight Sun, the city and its surroundings offer visitors a vast array of outdoor pursuits to enjoy. The countryside overflows with hiking routes and cycle paths. There are opportunities to try your hand at orienteering, fishing and river rafting too.

Finland of course is well known for its lakes. Boat trips out onto the many lakes that surround Rovaniemi can be enjoyed. There are even opportunities to go adventure boating on some of the lakes.

For family entertainment why not visit the Arctic Circle Husky Park? You'll get to meet the huskies and learn about them, as well as watch them perform in the husky circus.

Winter in Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi is a winter paradise. It is an ideal base for winter sports enthusiasts, the nearby Ounasvaara Ski Centre offering first class skiing facilities on its seven slopes. Equipment hire and ski lessons are available at the ski resort.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can be experienced from Rovaniemi too, as well as snowmobiling and husky safaris. For the kids Rovaniemi offers reindeer safaris, sled rides and toboggan courses...and, of course, that magical visit to see Santa Claus at home in Lapland.

Getting to Rovaniemi
Finnair run a service between Helsinki and Rovaniemi airport several times each day. International travellers should fly into Helsinki first and take a connecting flight to Rovaniemi. For transfer from the airport to the city itself a hire car is recommended. Car hire can be booked in advance for pick up at Rovaniemi airport through http://www.your-carhire.com
