Alonissos Travel Guide
Alonissos Greece would surely make the finals in any 'Sleepy Greek Island' contest. One of the less visited islands in the Sporades chain, this is a tranquil, soporific place with lots of old-world Greek charm. Nightlife is what brochure writers term 'low key' - so there isn't any. Beaches are few and not always easy to find but walkers have plenty to crow about. The island is green, fertile and heavily wooded with jaw-dropping scenery for the footloose.
Alonissos may have escaped the charms of the package tour industry but there are signs of change, with more visitors arriving every year. Good beaches are in short supply, most are steeped in stone and few have more than the basic facilities. Many are also difficult to find, thanks to some bizarre signposting. Alonissos also has little in the way of ancient ruins. Most of the traditional homes were buried in a 1965 earthquake and replaced with modern breeze-block bunkers. The surrounding waters are a marine park and, as a result, Alonissos can boast some of the the cleanest swimming in the Mediterranean. The island also has some fine walks. Paths run along the hilly backbone and though the going can get rough, the stunning views make up for any inconvenience. Source: greekisland.co.uk
